IEEE Indexed Conferences

Nearly a few days back working in research projects, a question arose from my students that “ Sir, basically what are the main differences between International conferences indexed IEEE which is hosted by Bangladesh in various Universities?

Well, today I try to give some explanation of the following question in my short research experienced career. First of all, I would like to describe the IEEE and IEEE Bangladesh Section. At a glance, IEEE abbreviated The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is a professional association for electronic engineering and electrical engineering with its corporate office in New York City and its operations center in Piscataway, New Jersey [1]. IEEE sponsors more than 1,900 annual conferences and events worldwide, curating cutting-edge content for all of the technical fields of interest within IEEE [2]. IEEE refers to The world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology [2]. This organization provides membership which is much prestigious and lucrative opportunity for all the students and researchers in the field of research. Again, IEEE Xplore is a research database for discovery and access to journal articles, conference proceedings, technical standards, and related materials on computer science, electrical engineering and electronics, and allied fields [3].

The IEEE Bangladesh section is the local branch of IEEE, New Jersey, USA. The IEEE headquarter in New Jersey approved the Bangladesh Section on 20th November 1993 and the GEO code is R00073. From only 54 founding members, IEEE Bangladesh Section has now grown to a family of over 2300 members [4]. The Section first initiated a National Conference on Electrotechnology in 1995 (ET95) which eventually turned into a Biennial conference entitled International Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (ICECE) since 2001 [4]. IEEE Bangladesh Section is the proud recipient of the 2015 Outstanding Section Membership Recruitment Performance Award, for the efforts made in continuing to grow IEEE membership in Bangladesh. Now, this section consists of 36 different branches around the whole country. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, the chairperson of the IEEE Bangladesh section grows the community with hard work and dedication.

Now, I am going to describe the differences my students asked. Firstly, I mention some IEEE indexed conference in Bangladesh regularly such as ICCIT, ICICT, ICAICT, ICAEE, ICIET, ICASERT, EICT, ICECTE and also NSysS [ before 2019 as in 2019 it was indexed in ACM] and so on. In 2020, Tensymp 2020 will ongoing and the host nation is Bangladesh which is a very prestigious and flagship IEEE event. In certain cases, we look for conferences publicity. Tensymp and other mentioned conferences are certainly good and are held for many years, which clearly shows the conference’s strong reputation, then every year ICCIT is held in Bangladesh where its popularity in Bangladesh is well known and IEEE area 10 (the Asia Pacific and Australia) hosts Tensymp. So it’s more popular in a wide range of countries. This year Bangladesh is the host country for Tensymp next year it will be hosted in some other country within region 10. So if I were you I would target Tensymp for this year. ICCIT is not going anywhere it’s going to be hosted in Bangladesh in the coming years as well. While attending Tensymp next year we will have to travel to another country.

Again, How many occasions the conferences held, its credibility speaks for. So it doesn’t matter that much if it does happen. But for instance, GHTC (Global Conference on Humanitarian Technology) is happening globally and a flagship IEEE conference. The same conference has a regional version like R10 HTC, which is also a conference on flagships. Some countries may then be focused on the same country-level conference.

It just takes 1 or 2 months for flagship conferences to get the paper in IEEEXplore. Yet it also takes more than 1 year for other conferences to get the paper in IEEEXplore.

From my point of view, Always target for Flagship conference on a global level, Next Region Level at the last country level. But when targetting country-level make sure it's being hosted over multiple years and the papers are actually being uploaded to IEEEXplore.

Another point is that applying for higher studies, the professor will certainly learn about a flagship global conference. Having a paper in a flagship conference will make it easy for the professor to be convinced that you can do research and publish but when it comes to locally organized international configurations. Maybe the professor doesn’t know how good the conference is (although it’s really good) that’s the biggest difference in my opinion.

Before submitting a paper to any conferences (either in Bangladesh or International and which index the paper in IEEE Xplore), someone should check that if the conference is being regularly organized and especially if the conference has enough time for reviewing the papers. This means that from the submission deadline to the decision notification, they should have at least 1–2 months. This is for ensuring the paper quality.

A successful conference depends on many things.

1: Keynote speaker

2. Organizing committee

3. General Chair (who leads everything)

4. Reviewer

5. Old reputation (if any)

Keynote speakers should be addressed when they call for paper from researchers. For example the keynote speaker for TENSYMP was selected 1 year ago when organizing committee applied for hosting a conference.

If a conference takes time to publish their name then you can assume that the conference is not good enough (for this point of view).

In conclusion, I hope that in my little experience and work, I will give the answer that what my students want to know. Research is very important for both student and professional life. Keep Researching!!!
